According to the Georgia Tech catalog, PUBP6402 ¡°examines challenges in research policy and management. The research activities of public, private, and not-for-profit organizations are contrasted in examining strategic planning, allocation of resources, technology transfer, and research evaluation practices.¡± While we will certainly examine the literature pertaining to these issues, the course will also be particularly oriented to research inasmuch as more than half the students enrolled PUBP6402 are Ph.D. students. This is not a ¡°classics of research policy and management¡± course. We will focus on recent research and theory pertaining to four major themes. The major themes include:
To some extent this course will be coordinated with Professor Juan Rogers' course, PUBP8530, ¡°Advanced Science and Technology Policy,¡± which is intended as a general overview and as preparation for the comprehensive exams. We will have three joint meetings with Professor Rogers and his students. Whereas Professor Rogers' course is especially useful for preparation for the comprehensive exams, PUBP6402 should prove useful for honing research skills as well as building in-depth knowledge of topics related to innovation, technology transfer and inter-institutional cooperative research. |
